Benefits of Buffers
Buffers prevent harmful erosion by holding soil in place. They filter, purify and cool runoff before it reaches the water. Buffers provide important habitat and food for many species. By preserving and adding to the natural vegetation (riparian buffer) along the shoreline of your pond, lake, river or stream you can really improve the water quality. For great buffer guidelines, please visit Candlewood Lake Authority's Buffer Guideline Article.
Soil Testing
The UConn Soil Nutrient Analysis lab is set up to do soil testing for the home gardener. It's simple and only $8 per sample. Basically, you collect and mix samples from several spots in your garden site, put about one cup in a Zipbloc Bag and mail to the lab at 6 Sherman Place U-102 Storrs, CT 06269-5102. Click here for soil sampling instructions and application form or visit UConn's Department of Plant Science web site for more information.
Connecticut Hardiness Zones
Experienced gardeners will advise you to use these zones only as a guide because each site has its own microclimate depending on elevation, orientation, exposure to wind etc. We've all had to move plants placed in the wrong spots, but after all, gardening is an adventure and a learning process!
